you promised you'd be there
they say a picture's worth a thousand words. that or, i'm just too lazy to write much tonight. whichever...
around mainz a bit:
fall in the countryside south of town
pretty tree on campus
geese! they were making such a damn racket.
on the train to buende:
attempts at cultivating the steep, rocky hillsides by the rhein
one of the little townses on the banks. and a boat.
any mideaval german lords out there? cuz this is where you'll live...
cologne!
another view of the dom in cologne, from the other side of the train station
and, fastnacht this morning! carnival, as you all know, ends with fat tuesday. but did you know that it starts on the 11th of november, at 11:11? well, it does. with a certain amount of style, now that you mention it...
the banner by the stage where the band was playing, announcing the date and time
little kids dressed up with one of the drum corps
people (in their red/white/yellow/blue fastnacht scarves) who showed up early to get a place on the fountain whence to witness the action and/or madness
mark sporting this year's fastnacht scarf and a little blinky guy on a necklace
awesome german guy selling noisemakers
the band playing a song called 'rosen montag' (which is the monday before carnival), and everyone singing along and swaying. sorry, i turned around kind of fast, this may give you motion sickness...
different clubs, groups, and neighborhoods had matching scarves or funny hats.
lots of people dressed up, and the fastnacht fountain.
even dogs get in on the action!
lots of people. i think they said there were over 5000 people in schillerplatz today.
the countdown to 11/11 at 11:11
another little kid in uniform
more lots of people. i swear, there were a lot of people there...
...aack!
*snaps photo*
*runs and hides*
the flag of the mainzer carnival verein, the volunteer group that "organizes" this madness, celebrating its 170th year of existence
be warned, this is long and in german. so andy, you have to watch it, the rest of you are exempt. it's the opening greeting, welcoming everyone to the festivities, talking about carnivalzeit, etc. and it's in rhymed verse. and the guy's actually quite funny... anyway.

the big attraction this morning was the reading out of the 'laws of fastnacht' from the big balcony. actually, as the guy started reading the 11th rule, it started raining like a mother. but we were determined to hear the reading, and then to indulge in bratwurst and donuts (no beer, i hadn't eaten breakfast). so we got *drenched* and it was fun. i was expecting craziness, but it was quite tame and not that huge a deal... it reminded me of the lighting of the city and county building in denver at christmastime- a lot of people show up, but it's very tame and family-oriented. i enjoyed it.
unfortunately, i was only minimally productive this afternoon... my mind kept wandering away from postwar literature, for some reason...
